Lizzo is finally ready to pull back the curtain on her latest musical endeavor. On Wednesday, March 18, the pop powerhouse took to social media to announce the official arrival of “Don’t Make Me Love U,” a track that has been the subject of much anticipation.

The announcement arrived via a surreal video clip that features the singer dancing with a motionless, spandex-clad doppelgänger. As the camera circles the duo, a snippet of the upbeat track plays in the background, featuring poignant lyrics: “Don’t make me love you if you’re just gonna change your mind.” Energetic and bold, Lizzo captioned the post by crowning the song a “new national anthem” and urged her fans to “get ready” for its Friday release.

Followers may recognize the tune from Lizzo’s February appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, where she treated the audience to a brief a cappella preview. This new single marks her first major release since October’s “Freak Show” and her June mixtape, My Face Hurts From Smiling, which included high-profile collaborations with SZA and Doja Cat.

The release of “Don’t Make Me Love U” signals a definitive shift in the artist’s creative trajectory. Lizzo previously pivoted away from a planned studio album titled Love in Real Life after its lead singles struggled to gain traction on the Billboard Hot 100—a chart she famously dominated with hits like “About Damn Time” and “Truth Hurts.”

Reflecting on her artistic evolution in a recent interview with Vulture, Lizzo explained that much of her shelved material no longer resonated with her current mindset. “By 2025, I’ve changed, the world has changed so much,” she remarked. “It just wasn’t what I was feeling right now. I was like, ‘I need to do s–t differently… I’m going to just start following my instincts.’”

Beyond her work in the studio, Lizzo has remained a constant fixture in the spotlight, recently completing intimate residencies at Blue Note jazz clubs in Los Angeles and New York City. She is also set to venture into the world of children’s literature with the release of her upcoming book, Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’.
