Legendary Pictures’ New Sci-Fi Epic Is a Mix of Fantastic Voyage and ’90s Nostalgia

For those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s, the constant stream of modern revivals based on our childhood favorites has become the new normal. Between the recent release of Masters of the Universe, an upcoming Thundercats film, and the anticipation surrounding X-Men ‘97 season 2, millennial nostalgia is working overtime. Yet, the announcement of a live-action adaptation of a beloved 90s cartoon has genuinely piqued my interest.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on June 23 that a live-action take on The Magic School Bus is officially in development. The project is helmed by director Rob Letterman, with Elizabeth Banks set to step into the iconic role of Ms. Frizzle. Given Letterman’s track record with 90s properties—having directed the 2015 Goosebumps film and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu—he seems uniquely qualified to shepherd this transition.

As for Banks, her extensive comedic background—ranging from The Lego Movie to 30 Rock and Scrubs—gives her the perfect toolkit to capture Ms. Frizzle’s eccentricities. While this is inherently a property for children, my hope is that it captures an all-ages appeal, and Banks is an inspired choice to bridge that gap. She possesses a certain “spunky, unconventional energy” reminiscent of her performance as Effie Trinket, which is exactly the vibe Ms. Frizzle requires. It appears she has been linked to this project since at least 2020, and with Legendary now producing, we are finally seeing the gears turn.

Originally a book series written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen, The Magic School Bus introduced us to Ms. Frizzle and her class as they navigated the wonders of the universe in a sentient bus capable of microscopic shrinking. While the franchise is famously associated with the body-traversing premise of Fantastic Voyage, it tackled everything from deep space to volcanic interiors. The 90s PBS animated adaptation, led by the incomparable Lily Tomlin, remains a staple of educational television, while the 2017 Netflix revival updated the formula for a new generation. Bringing this concept to the big screen with a modern budget opens up incredible cinematic possibilities.

Beyond standard reboot territory, this feels like an opportunity to lean into a true adventure narrative. If the filmmakers fully embrace the potential of the source material, we could be looking at a spectacular journey—perhaps even a modern homage to the classic, high-stakes biological exploration seen in films like Fantastic Voyage or even the frantic energy of Osmosis Jones.

I am trying to keep my expectations in check, but the narrative versatility of the source material suggests a sprawling franchise potential, moving from the microscopic to the cosmic. However, one non-negotiable request for director Letterman: that hair must be iconic. Please, let it be bright red and frizzy. A blonde Ms. Frizzle is a line we simply cannot cross.
