Kratos to be Recast in God of War TV Series After Four Episodes Filmed

According to reports from Deadline, Amazon Prime Video’s ambitious God of War adaptation has hit a significant roadblock. The production will be recasting the iconic role of Kratos after lead actor Ryan Hurst sustained a severe injury during filming.

The injury occurred in late June while Hurst was performing a stunt for the series. At the time of the accident, production had been underway in Vancouver for several months, with the team having already completed four full episodes. The project had previously hit a milestone in February when the first official look at the duo of Kratos and Atreus was released to the public.

Filming was immediately halted following the incident. While Hurst has undergone surgery and is currently on the mend, the road to recovery for a torn bicep is extensive—often requiring six months to a year before an actor can return to the intense physical demands of a role like Kratos. Facing the prospect of a production hiatus that could stretch well into 2027, Sony and Amazon have opted to recast the lead character to keep the project on track, with cameras expected to roll again this October. There is no word yet on who might replace Hurst, but the four episodes already filmed will largely require reshooting.

Hurst’s involvement in the project was initially announced back in January. A familiar face from hits like Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, Hurst is particularly beloved by the gaming community for his powerful performance as Thor in 2022’s God of War Ragnarök. Beyond the small screen, audiences can catch him in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, arriving in theaters this week, where he portrays Mentor to Tom Holland’s Telemachus.
