Red Dead Redemption 2 once shipped on two discs.
Rockstar Games shared details about Grand Theft Auto VI ahead of pre-orders opening on June 25. Along with information about bonuses for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners, the studio confirmed that physical game editions will not contain discs.
According to the official Rockstar website, retail versions of GTA VI arrive on November 12 and include only a digital download code. This decision allows players to preload the game before the official launch on November 19.
While preloading from retail copies offers convenience, the move away from physical media will likely disappoint many fans. Rockstar previously released major titles on discs, such as the two-disc physical edition of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Other modern games use discs as activation keys and allow data installation before unlocking access on release day. Rockstar chose a different path despite that option. Some players suggest this strategy aims to curb leaks and spoilers—and potentially restrict the secondary market for used copies.
GTA VI launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
