Last August, Deadline announced that the action movie The Pirate is coming from Amazon MGM Studios, based on a spec script by Ms. Marvel writer Will Dunn. The project was described as The Raid set on a pirate ship, referring to the 2011 thriller written and directed by Gareth Evans.

At the time, Aquaman star Jason Momoa and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch joined the project as producers. Momoa is expected to star, and Leitch is expected to direct. Leitch is also producing the film with his wife Kelly McCormick under their 87North banner. 87North is known for producing movies like Nobody, The Fall Guy, and Violent Night.

Little news has emerged about the movie since that initial announcement, but producer Kelly McCormick offered an update on The Pirate while speaking with Polygon about the upcoming sequel Violent Night 2.

We are rewriting The Pirate with Jason Momoa.

McCormick explained further:

It’s happening, just he’s busy. We’ve got some stuff going on. It’s brewing. It’s definitely brewing and it’s something we love. I know Amazon and Jason are excited about it. It’s something that we can’t wait to get to.

Jason Momoa has a packed schedule. The actor recently starred in Supergirl, introducing his new DC character, Lobo, to the revamped DC Universe. He was also set to star in Sony’s Helldivers movie, though he recently left that project. Momoa’s IMDb page lists nine upcoming projects, including Street Fighter, The Minecraft Movie: Squared, Dune Part III, and Fast Forever.
