Jack Black wants a live-action Yakuza role, and he’s the perfect fit for this diaper-wearing character

Jack Black has set his sights on cinematic horizons far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. Following his vocal turn as Bowser, the actor revealed to ScreenRant his desire to join a live-action rendition of Sega’s long-running Yakuza (now Like a Dragon) franchise. While he might not fit the mold of the stoic protagonist Kazuma Kiryu or the chaotic Goro Majima, the series is famous for its eccentric supporting cast—and one specific character seems tailor-made for Black’s signature brand of high-energy whimsy.

Patriarch Gondawara is an imposing underworld figure with a remarkably peculiar hobby. He made his unforgettable debut in 2006’s Yakuza 2 (and returned in the 2017 remake, Yakuza Kiwami 2) during the “Be My Baby” side quest. The encounter begins with a street brawl on Kamurocho’s Pink Street, but after Kiryu pummels Gondawara’s henchmen, the Patriarch offers an olive branch: “mind-blowing” hospitality at his favorite sanctuary. This turns out to be a specialized fetish club where tough men find solace in wearing diapers and being pampered like infants. The scene ends in another brawl after a confused Kiryu tries to make a polite exit, but the character’s legend was born.

Gondawara returned in 2024’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, where he helps protagonist Ichiban Kasuga orchestrate a faux snowstorm in Hawaii to fulfill an elderly couple’s wish. The “snow” is actually the absorbent filling from thousands of disposable diapers—a moment that perfectly captures the franchise’s unique blend of heartfelt sincerity and absolute absurdity. This is exactly the kind of role where Black thrives, balancing over-the-top comedy with genuine emotion. While Gondawara is traditionally Japanese, reimagining him as an international “connoisseur” of the man-baby lifestyle would be a hilarious fit for Black.

“I’m throwing my hat in that ring,” Black told ScreenRant regarding the bizarre crime drama. “I don’t know if there are any roles for a portly American, but Sega, give me a jingle. Let’s make it happen.”

Black’s pitch comes at an interesting time for the property. Amazon’s recent 2024 live-action series, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, took a somber approach that largely ignored the games’ slapstick humor, resulting in a lukewarm reception and no second season. This followed Takashi Miike’s 2007 film adaptation, which also struggled to capture the series’ lightning-in-a-bottle tone. Fans are still waiting for a definitive adaptation that embraces the franchise’s inherent weirdness—and Jack Black might just be the missing ingredient required to pull it off.
