Ivy Road, the Developer of Wanderstop, to Shut Down Tomorrow

Ivy Road Studios, the creative force behind the introspective narrative simulator Wanderstop, has announced it will officially shutter its doors tomorrow, March 31. The development team shared the somber news this past Friday, marking the end of the indie outfit’s journey.

The studio was established by Davey Wreden, the visionary creator of meta-narrative hits The Stanley Parable and The Beginner’s Guide. In a candid update on their official website, the team revealed that the closure stems from an inability to secure financial backing for their next endeavor, titled Engine Angel.

“Securing funding in the current climate is exceptionally difficult,” the post explained. “While we anticipated these headwinds, we are nonetheless heartbroken that we won’t be able to bring Engine Angel to fruition as a collective.” Along with the announcement, the team released a short concept teaser, showcasing what appears to be a colorful and eccentric take on vehicular combat.

For fans of Wanderstop, the game will remain available for purchase and download on all current storefronts. Ivy Road also teased a final parting gift designed to bring the game to a wider audience; publisher Annapurna Interactive is expected to provide more details on this update soon.

To assist players in the interim, the developers provided a “chapter select” input code. This allows users to revisit specific narrative beats or bypass potential progression issues. At the main menu, players can trigger the feature by entering the following sequence on a d-pad or keyboard: UP, LEFT, DOWN, RIGHT, UP, B (RMB), UP, RIGHT, DOWN, LEFT, UP, B (RMB), UP, DOWN, UP.

Wanderstop follows the story of Alta, a retired warrior who finds herself reluctantly managing a tea house in a whimsical, enchanted forest. While the game features traditional “cozy” mechanics—such as harvesting flora and serving peculiar customers—the experience is anchored by a poignant exploration of Alta’s internal struggle and the lingering trauma of her past life.

In his 8/10 review, Executive Editor Kyle Hilliard praised the title’s unique approach: “I admire how the game subverts genre tropes to deliver a pensive, witty, and moving story. Watching Alta grapple with her own limitations is a resonant experience that lingers long after the credits roll. Wanderstop succeeds as a piece of art that forces reflection, and for that, it is truly special.”
