Hugh Jackman’s brutal Logan replacement officially arrives in two weeks

Hugh Jackman has firmly established himself as Hollywood’s premier choice for portraying the sunset years of iconic, battle-hardened heroes.

His 2017 return as the weary mutant in James Mangold’s Logan offered a profound, gritty deconstruction of a legendary character grappling with his own mortality. It remains arguably his most compelling work to date. Now, Jackman is set to inhabit another titan of folklore—one whose legend stretches back over six centuries—in a project that promises a similarly somber, grounded perspective.

Directed by Michael Sarnoski, known for the poignant Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, The Death of Robin Hood arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026. According to A24, the narrative follows a battered, guilt-ridden version of the legendary outlaw who, after a final confrontation, finds himself at a crossroad where a mysterious figure offers him an unexpected path toward redemption.

Sarnoski is moving away from the swashbuckling, romanticized tropes typically associated with Sherwood Forest. Instead, he aims for a raw, visceral reality. “You often think of medieval skirmishes as noble knights, but in reality, it was usually just desperate individuals fighting for survival in the mud,” Sarnoski noted in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The film seeks to capture the intimate, grueling struggle of two weary men clashing in the dirt.

The director drew inspiration from his own upbringing. While he cherished the lighthearted 1973 Disney animated adaptation, his perspective shifted as he grew older—influenced by the loss of his father and his discovery of the haunting 17th-century ballad Robin Hood’s Death, which depicts the hero’s quiet, tragic demise. Sarnoski found the juxtaposition between the immortal, joyful cartoon and the stark, human reality of the historical ballads deeply fascinating.

Jackman’s involvement was intentional, as Sarnoski sought an actor who could project both raw, intimidating aggression and profound, weary kindness. The synergy between Jackman’s history of playing volatile figures and his natural capacity for empathy is precisely what the director believes will make this iteration of the outlaw feel strikingly human.
