Although The Super Mario Galaxy Movie faced a polarized reception from critics and long-time fans, it has cemented itself as a colossal financial triumph. The collaboration between Universal and Illumination has reigned supreme at the U.S. box office for three consecutive weeks, raking in a staggering $750 million globally. Buoyed by this momentum, Nintendo’s creative visionary, Shigeru Miyamoto, has expressed a desire to integrate the film’s newly established lore—specifically regarding Princess Peach’s expanded background—into future gaming entries.

During an interview with Japanese publication Nintendo Dream, Miyamoto admitted that while he generally prefers to avoid rigid narrative constraints for his characters, he finds value in upholding this sibling bond for future installments.
Miyamoto elaborated on why Nintendo has historically kept the Mario universe’s lore nebulous for over four decades. “We often avoid heavy backstory because it can act as a creative shackle, potentially limiting the scope of our future game design,” he explained. “I’m comfortable with gameplay mechanics dictating the experience, but for years, my aversion to narrative rigidity was exactly why we stayed away from film adaptations.” While he didn’t explicitly draw a line to The Legend of Zelda, the philosophy clearly echoes Nintendo’s broader design ethos.
Interestingly, the sisterly connection between Peach and Rosalina wasn’t some deep-seated secret Nintendo had been guarding. It was a narrative beat crafted specifically for the cinematic adaptation. “I hadn’t codified her backstory before this project,” Miyamoto noted. “However, the process of developing the film has made exploring these characters in new ways quite enjoyable. Consequently, I intend to weave these film-established details into the fabric of future games whenever possible.”
While we likely shouldn’t hold our breath for a somber, character-driven drama regarding their early years, the potential for a co-op adventure featuring Peach and Rosalina is an exciting prospect for the series’ future.
