Sony has officially set a date for its transition to a digital-only format, stating that starting in January 2028, new PlayStation games will be sold exclusively in digital form.

Sony is preparing for a digital future. Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation games will be sold exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and retailers. Previously released discs will continue to work on consoles equipped with a disc drive.

This warning has now appeared on new boxes for the PS5 with a disc drive and on PlayStation Direct. It is displayed alongside the consoles and separately sold disc drives:

Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation games will be available for purchase in the PlayStation Store and from retailers exclusively in digital format. Game discs released prior to January 2028 can still be played on this console.

This serves as another signal that Sony does not intend to change its decision. The company is already warning buyers that the disc drive of future PS5 consoles will not be used for new physical releases.
