Amidst a flurry of social media speculation regarding her personal circle, Hilary Duff has returned to the spotlight with “Roommates,” a poignant new single exploring the chaotic realities of being a working parent.

Unveiled on January 15 alongside an evocative music video, the track serves as the second offering from her highly anticipated album, Luck … or Something, which is scheduled for a February 20 release. Duff, known for her era-defining role in Lizzie McGuire, characterized the song as a reflection of those moments when the weight of existence feels particularly heavy.

“It captures that visceral longing for a more liberated time—before our schedules were consumed by carpool duties, financial planning, and the persistent intrusion of old insecurities,” explained the singer-actress. Duff penned the track with her husband, Matthew Koma, with whom she shares three children. She describes the song as the “restless hum” of a woman striving to reclaim her individual rhythm and sense of self.

The upcoming launch of Luck … or Something marks a significant musical resurgence for Duff, representing her first full-length project in over a decade. Her previous studio effort, 2015’s Breathe In. Breathe Out., was a commercial success, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. To celebrate this new chapter, Duff has lined up a series of intimate performances this month, followed by several mini-residencies in Las Vegas throughout the spring.

The release comes at a time when Duff’s name has been trending due to online discourse surrounding Ashley Tisdale’s recent essay for The Cut. In the piece, Tisdale detailed a “breakup” with a toxic group of friends—a narrative that led fans to scrutinize old photographs and suggest Duff’s involvement.

Matthew Koma seemingly addressed the rumors with his trademark wit, sharing a satirical mock-up of the essay’s headline that took a sharp jab at “tone-deaf” social commentary, effectively defending his wife against the tabloid noise.
