Hideo Kojima’s New Horror Game Features a Special Mechanic for Easily Frightened Players

When Hideo Kojima first unveiled OD in 2023, the trailer—featuring a harrowing, visceral performance by Sophia Lillis (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves)—left an indelible mark, signaling that the visionary behind Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid was crafting a truly unsettling experience. However, Kojima recently revealed that he is designing a specialized mechanic to ensure the game remains approachable even for those who typically shy away from extreme horror.

In a comprehensive feature by Entertainment Weekly celebrating the 25th anniversary of Xbox, Kojima offered fresh insights into OD. The project, which is being published by Xbox, features a collaboration with acclaimed horror auteur Jordan Peele (Get Out, Nope) as a co-writer. Reflecting on the game’s unconventional development, Kojima noted that he shopped the concept to numerous industry giants, only to be repeatedly told that his vision was too eccentric to be realized. It wasn't until he presented the idea to former Xbox lead Phil Spencer that the project found a home. Asha Sharma, who succeeded Spencer, noted that OD represents a fundamentally different breed of gaming.

The feature also unveiled a striking new screenshot from OD, depicting a sterile, sickly yellow corridor lined with doors—one of which hides a sinister, shadowy figure. An aging television set displaying an image of Lillis serves as the room’s primary focal point, evoking the claustrophobic tension reminiscent of P.T., the infamous playable teaser for Kojima’s ill-fated Silent Hills project.

Beyond Lillis, the cast includes Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) and the late Udo Kier (Flesh for Frankenstein), who passed away in November 2025. While Entertainment Weekly reported that Kier’s likeness was scanned into the project prior to his death, Kojima Productions has declined to provide further details regarding his role.

Kojima describes OD as an unprecedented experience, emphasizing his desire to push the boundaries of fear. Yet, he remains committed to ensuring the game is inclusive for those who might otherwise be overwhelmed. He hinted at a specialized system designed to help players navigate intense sequences, though he remained tight-lipped on the mechanics to preserve the sense of discovery. This reflects his ongoing efforts to broaden the accessibility of his games; notably, Death Stranding 2 (2025) allows players to essentially "bypass" boss encounters after a single failure, a thoughtful design choice that prioritizes player agency over traditional difficulty gates.

It is easy to envision how such a philosophy could revolutionize horror gaming—a genre often celebrated for its storytelling depth but frequently gated by the stress of jumpscares and high-difficulty spikes. Should Kojima's approach succeed, it may well set a new industry standard for the genre.

OD currently does not have an official release date.
