SM Entertainment
In the world of K-pop, the secret to a girl group’s longevity has long been debated: is it the spark of a breakout star, the force of a singular concept, or an intangible chemistry? Sixteen months into their journey, SM Entertainment’s octet, Hearts2Hearts, proves that the answer lies in the latter.
The group’s philosophy is defined by what it chooses to forgo. Instead of forcing a single “center” archetype, Hearts2Hearts distributes the spotlight, weaving vocal layers and choreography to ensure every member contributes to a cohesive narrative. While many groups attempt this collaborative model, few achieve it with such authenticity. Whether performing live, navigating rigorous vocal runs, or appearing in unscripted content, the balance remains unshaken.
Their viral success with the house-inspired anthem “RUDE!”—which peaked at No. 57 on the Billboard Global 200—was a testament to this unity. Stella’s sharp English narration, while a standout, served to elevate the group’s collective identity rather than isolate her as an individual act. With sold-out showcases across New York and Los Angeles this past spring, the group is clearly transcending their rookie status.
Following this trajectory, their second mini-album, spearheaded by the sun-drenched track “Lemon Tang,” highlights their versatility. Produced by the legendary KENZIE, the track’s bossa-nova-inflected chorus serves as a metaphor for the group itself: a blend of distinct notes that, when combined, create something profoundly sweet. In this exclusive conversation with Billboard Korea, the eight members reflect on their milestone chart achievements, the electric atmosphere of their U.S. tour, and their vision for the summer ahead.
The Evolution of Hearts2Hearts
Reflecting on the last sixteen months, how do you view your growth as a team?
JIWOO: We are constantly evolving, but what I’m proudest of is that our distinct musical identity is finally crystallizing. We’ve gained so much perspective since our debut, and there’s a newfound confidence in how we approach our craft—both as individuals and as a unified team.
YE-ON: I agree with Jiwoo. The biggest change has been our comfort level on stage. Initially, the focus was entirely on technical precision, but now we’re focused on the energy exchange with our fans. It’s become much more organic and joyous.
The “SM girl group” label carries significant weight. How has that legacy shaped your journey?
YE-ON: We don’t view it as a burden; rather, it’s a powerful catalyst. It has pushed us to refine our work ethic and strive to meet the high expectations that come with being part of this lineage.
What made “Lemon Tang” the right evolution after “RUDE!”?
YUHA: “RUDE!” was about breaking boundaries and asserting our presence. “Lemon Tang” retains that self-assured spirit but infuses it with a refreshing, summery warmth. It represents the beauty of our collaboration, turning something tart into something harmonious.
Seeing your name on the Billboard charts for the first time—what did that feel like?
CARMEN: It felt surreal. I’m endlessly thankful to our fans. Seeing our name on the chart solidified the reality that our music is resonating on a global scale. It has only fueled our desire to improve for the next chapter.
STELLA: It was a moment of pure shock and gratitude. It transformed the way we view our reach; realizing that people worldwide are connecting with our art is the greatest motivation we could ask for.
Finally, what do you hope listeners take away from this summer?
YUHA: Just like the feeling of our latest track, I hope Hearts2Hearts becomes a source of happiness—a bright, uplifting companion for everyone’s summer.
JUUN: We hope our music becomes the soundtrack to your most fun memories this season, making your days feel a little lighter and brighter.
