Cynthia Nixon plays the mother of Olivia Rodrigo’s boyfriend in the music video for “Take Me Home (4 Christmas),” the Grammy winner’s first holiday song. Nixon discussed the cameo on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Thursday (Nov. 5), the same day the song and video were released.
“She is the kindest, loveliest, most fun person,” the Sex and the City and The Gilded Age actress said of Rodrigo. “I was very startled and thrilled to be invited.”
“I guess she is a big fan of not only Sex and the City, but Steve and Miranda in particular,” Nixon added, referring to the relationship between her character, Miranda, and David Eigenberg’s Steve.
Rodrigo told Jimmy Fallon in May that Sex and the City is her favorite show and that “multiple songs” on her Billboard 200-topping album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love were inspired by Steve and Miranda’s relationship. “I think I watched every single episode maybe three times,” she said.
In the video, Rodrigo imagines her boyfriend, played by Saturday Night Live’s Ben Marshall, showing her off to his family over the holidays.
“The video for @oliviarodrigo’s ‘take me home (4 christmas)’ is out now!” Nixon wrote on Instagram after its release. “I had so much fun playing mom to the hilarious and adorable @benmarshallstyle and imagining what it would be like if the great Olivia Rodrigo showed up on our doorstep for Christmas!”
She added, “Thank you Olivia for bringing me into your festive wonderland for a day.”
