Haruomi Hosono, Yellow Magic Orchestra Co-Founder and Harry Styles Inspiration, Announces New Album

Haruomi Hosono, the visionary co-founder of the influential Japanese electronic outfit Yellow Magic Orchestra, shared exciting news this Monday, May 18: his 23rd studio album is officially slated for a fall release.

The upcoming record, titled Sincerely Yours, is scheduled to arrive on September 11 via Ghostly International. Reflecting on this new chapter, the 78-year-old icon shared a thoughtful statement: “I am now 78 years old, but from here on, I feel a growing curiosity toward the unknown music that my new self will create, while also embracing the music of my former self—as if I now carry two musical worlds within me.”

In addition to the album launch, fans can look forward to exclusive live performances. Hosono is set to take the stage on September 16 at New York’s iconic Radio City Music Hall, followed by a show on September 20 at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

Emerging from Tokyo in the late 1970s, Yellow Magic Orchestra crafted pioneering, avant-garde soundscapes that mirrored the innovation of contemporaries like Kraftwerk. Their sonic legacy has profoundly shaped diverse genres, from ambient and synth-pop to modern techno. Beyond YMO, Hosono’s extensive body of work—spanning his tenure with the folk-rock band Happy End to his storied solo career—has resonated with a wide spectrum of modern artists. Celebrated musicians such as Mac DeMarco, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, and Harry Styles have all frequently cited him as a pivotal influence.

During a 2022 conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Harry Styles revealed that his own chart-topping project, Harry’s House, was a direct tribute to the legend. “It was named after Hosono; he had an album in the ’70s called Hosono House,” Styles noted. “I spent that little chunk in Japan and heard that record, and I was like, ‘I love that.’”

Released in 1973, Hosono House marked the debut of his solo journey, offering listeners a beautifully curated collection of 11 folk-rock compositions that remain cherished to this day.
