From the day of the release of the second trailer, screenshots, illustrations, and more, a page for GTA 6 appeared in the PlayStation Store, where you can view general information about the game and add it to your wishlist. It’s been a month and a half, yet nothing similar has been made in the Microsoft Store, even though the Xbox Series X/S version was announced alongside the PS5.
It’s likely due to the partnership agreement between Rockstar Games and Sony, which was discussed some time ago. It involves special marketing considerations for Grand Theft Auto VI on the Japanese platform, demonstrated in various ways. Trailer 2 was shot on the PlayStation 5, which was specially highlighted, and on the digital store website, the anticipated blockbuster is always prominently displayed, whereas it is entirely absent on competitors’ sites.
Interestingly, if you open the page on a console or in the PS App, you can see an updated release date at the end of the first trailer, which was released in December 2023 and mentioned 2025 as the release window. This reassures some fans, making them believe there won’t be more delays. Although a date might be changed once, it can hold again if necessary.
Another interesting detail is visible in the web version. There, the exact release time is provided. It was altered post-factum, so it can be trusted as accurate rather than a placeholder (which it likely was originally). For regions, access opens at 00:00 from May 25 to 26, indicating a phased release — beginning at midnight in each time zone. This means lucky ones in New Zealand and some Oceanian islands will officially experience the “sixth” first. However, Xbox owners can change their settings to join them.
Of course, such a release means many spoilers for those waiting their turn. But the concern isn’t about a few hours — it’s about a few days, as the game might leak online beforehand, similar to GTA 5. A simultaneous launch would be more logical, like with updates for GTA Online, regardless of the hour. But this means it’s much later for some and closer to day’s end for others. They also gradually released RDR 2.
But why Tuesday? Tuesday is a traditional launch day, ever since November 24, 1992, with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The second day of the week was convenient for many reasons. New shipments were dispatched before the weekend, allowing retail workers time to prepare. It simplified financial monitoring, counting sold copies. Developers had weekdays ahead to fix errors and bugs, providing patches as soon as possible. However, these reasons are less relevant with the shift to digital games. Some companies stick to traditions, while others prepare releases for other days. For instance, Mafia: The Old Country is set to debut on August 8, a Friday, allowing a free weekend for players. But GTA 6 doesn’t need to adjust for everyone — people adjust to it, already taking time off or planning vacations (consider this now).
