The workweek began with encouraging news for everyone awaiting GTA 6. On May Day night, another showcase of Borderlands 4 was held during State of Play, but it became known half a day before that the game was postponed from September 23 to the 12th.
This was, of course, linked to the rights holder’s plans to release Grand Theft Auto VI in late fall, supposedly needing a bigger gap between releases. There were also suspicions that the earlier date was due to a desire to avoid competing with another big project, Marathon by Bungie. However, Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, stated that the change is solely due to confidence in the product’s quality and is unrelated to the release of other titles.
Borderlands 4 shipping early is 100% the result of confidence in the game and development trajectory backed by actual tasks and bug find/fix rates. Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date.

And yesterday, that very news broke. It was immediately commented on by Strauss Zelnick, head of Take-Two.
We fully support Rockstar Games’ decision to take more time to realize their vision for GTA VI, promising to be a groundbreaking blockbuster that meets audience expectations. We appreciate the anticipation and remain steadfast in achieving excellence. As we continue to release remarkable titles, we prepare for a successful year and profits for our investors.
Investors reacted to the delay, and record stock figures saw a slight dip, losing slightly less than $20 per share. The company’s position remains strong.
Journalist Jason Schreier, who had previously prepared us for this development (one, two), shared an insider view: no one at Rockstar believed that “the sixth” would release this fall. “Too much work, too little time, and a real desire from management to avoid harsh crunches.”
Nobody I’ve talked to at Rockstar has believed Fall 2025 was a real window for a very long time now. Too much work, not enough time, and what appears to be a real desire from management to avoid brutal crunch. GTA VI slipping to 2026 has seemed inevitable for months if not longer
