GTA 6 Could Finally Fix Gaming’s Huge Drug Problem

Gamers are buzzing over recent claims that Grand Theft Auto 6 will let players stash cocaine and ingest it whenever they please. While that certainly sounds like a fun, on-brand touch, developer Rockstar Games has a genuine opportunity here to push the boundaries of modern game design.

We already know narcotics will play a major role in the narrative of GTA 6. As highlighted during the initial gameplay reveal, Jason and Lucia stumble into a botched drug deal during the opening acts. Later, while working executive protection detail for a media executive, one of their charges slips away to use cocaine in a private conference room. Such references are hardly shocking in a Grand Theft Auto title, nor is it unprecedented for Rockstar to weave controlled substances into gameplay mechanics, given that the protagonists of both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 could indulge in illicit goods. I certainly don’t want or expect GTA 6 to preach a moralistic lesson about addiction, but I am hoping Rockstar takes this mechanic a few steps further than the industry standard.

Typically, pharmaceutical or illicit items in video games grant temporary attribute bonuses accompanied by minor penalties if abused. Starfield and The Outer Worlds 2 serve as prime examples of this trend among major modern releases. In Starfield, overindulging in stimulants slows your stamina recovery and slashes your maximum inventory capacity by 20%. While curing an addiction takes little more than a quick trip to a physician, it can become an annoyance if you happen to be stranded far from civilization. Meanwhile, in The Outer Worlds 2, excessive reliance on your tobacco-infused inhaler risks triggering a permanent “substance dependency” flaw, which reduces the health restorative value while lowering overall toxicity. All things considered, these consequences remain exceedingly mild.

Aaron Garbut, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North, recently shared with Game Informer, “Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way – everything is dialed up, detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density. I don’t think we have ever created anything close to this before.” Furthermore, Game Informer’s preview highlighted that the choice-driven design of GTA 6 is engineered to encourage multiple playthroughs. Keeping these design philosophies in mind, I would be genuinely surprised if substance consumption failed to yield much deeper, more intricate gameplay repercussions than what we have experienced in past titles.

There are several distinct paths this feature could follow. We already know that dietary habits and workout regimens—or the total lack thereof—will influence how Jason and Lucia look and feel. Naturally, a relentless cocaine habit might suppress their appetites, resulting in sleeker character models. But what I am truly eager to discover is how drug usage might ripple through interpersonal dynamics. It would make complete narrative sense for the optional romance between Jason and Lucia to strain if one partner routinely indulges while the other stays completely clean. In fact, it’s easy to envision this becoming a barrier that locks players out of GTA 6‘s romantic subplot entirely. Then again, if both characters share the habit regularly, it might leave their relationship entirely unscathed.

Based on various previews released so far, non-player characters exhibit far more sophisticated and nuanced reactions than those found in many competing titles. Put simply, just because you have the freedom to consume cocaine at a moment’s notice in GTA 6 certainly doesn’t mean you should do it consequence-free. Miami’s wild drug subculture has been thoroughly romanticized in cinema and television through classics like Miami Vice and Scarface, but in reality, drawing out a bag of narcotics in plain sight at a busy restaurant or public bar carries heavy risks—ranging from disapproving glares and viral social media footage to getting tossed out onto the street or, in worst-case scenarios, drawing immediate police attention. Given the extraordinary level of realism promised for GTA 6, that same logic deserves to govern the game world.

Furthermore, it would be fascinating if players who choose to play Jason and Lucia as active substance users unlock exclusive missions as a direct consequence. Maintaining an expensive drug habit isn’t cheap, after all. At the same time, embracing a severe addiction could permanently bar you from taking on specific contracts or cultivating certain alliances. Even if a prospective client amassed their fortune through trafficking, they are hardly going to want impaired bodyguards protecting them.

I am rarely let down when a video game incorporates substance mechanics: much like parkour or swinging a massive broadsword, it provides an eccentric outlet to explore extreme behaviors I would naturally avoid in real life. Yet, apart from brief, psychedelic visual filters or temporary statistical penalties, these systems rarely produce lasting narrative or gameplay ramifications. Honestly, controlled substances ought to feel like a far more impactful element of the Grand Theft Auto experience than they have historically been. And if Rockstar’s lofty ambitions for GTA 6 truly match their promises, that reality is likely just around the corner.
