‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ Is Responsible for ‘Danganronpa 2×2’s Delay, but Not for the Reason You Think

As the gaming landscape clears its schedule ahead of the monumental November debut of Grand Theft Auto 6, studios across the industry are desperately stepping out of the way. The wave of release date shuffles continues to swell, with Danganronpa 2×2 joining the ranks of titles intentionally steering clear of Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster.

Speaking with Crunchyroll, series mastermind and writer Kazuta Kodaka didn’t hesitate to acknowledge the elephant in the room. “There’s a certain AAA/AAAA title landing imminently,” Kodaka explained, noting that the team strategically shifted their window to dodge the commotion. While the adjustment is a practical necessity embraced by creators worldwide, Kodaka noted that the unexpected cushion has fortunately gifted the development team some precious extra polish time.

Naturally, professional ambition wasn’t the only motive guiding the choice. Kodaka admitted with refreshing candor, “I wouldn’t have any bandwidth to finish the project while completely absorbed in Grand Theft Auto 6, so postponing was practically inevitable.” It’s an honest sentiment that many players can easily appreciate. As arguably the most anticipated interactive launch in history, Rockstar’s sprawling open-world experience has creators and fans alike eagerly waiting to see if it will justify the immense hype. Kodaka, alongside the rest of the gaming community, has just a few more months to wait before Grand Theft Auto 6 finally hits shelves on November 19.

Functioning as a comprehensive reimagining of 2012’s cult classic visual novel Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, the upcoming Danganronpa 2×2 aims to revitalize the murder-mystery adventure. Beyond standard visual enhancements and quality-of-life upgrades, the remake completely translates the core environment from flat 2D into fully realized 3D spaces. Most excitingly for returning fans, the project introduces a brand-new storyline titled Slayhem Mode. Producer Shohei Sakakibara has confirmed that this alternate route will deliver roughly 35 hours of fresh content, eclipsing the original campaign’s 30-hour runtime.

Danganronpa 2×2 is scheduled to launch in early 2027 across Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
