Netflix series artwork compared with Grand Theft Auto illustrations

Netflix released the Colombian series El cártel de los Sapos: El origen, also listed as Cartel Origins, in 2021. Netflix describes it as a story spanning four decades, following two brothers from Cali as they balance family life with criminal business and rise from poverty to become cocaine kingpins.

The show’s opening sequence drew attention from Grand Theft Auto players. Reddit users placed several of its illustrations beside promotional artwork from the GTA series. The comparisons included images associated with GTA Online, GTA V and GTA: San Andreas, with viewers pointing to similar compositions, character poses and outlined rendering.

The circulated examples paired characters from the Netflix introduction with several Rockstar Games illustrations. One frame was compared with GTA Online art, while others resembled key images used for GTA V and San Andreas. The posts presented a visual comparison rather than an official finding about how the illustrations were produced.

At the time covered by the original report, neither Take-Two nor Rockstar Games had issued a public response to the similarities. Netflix’s own listing presents the production as a historical Colombian crime drama about the formation of a Cali criminal organization and does not connect the series to Grand Theft Auto.
