The whispers have finally been confirmed: a brand-new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is officially in the works. On May 27, CD Projekt Red unveiled The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, with a slated release window of 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
While the studio initially intended to break the news during their scheduled REDStreams event on May 28, an unexpected internal leak prompted an earlier disclosure. This highly anticipated expansion is being developed in collaboration with Fool’s Theory, the Polish indie team behind acclaimed titles such as The Thaumaturge and Seven: The Days Long Gone. Notably, Fool’s Theory is already deeply embedded in the franchise, as they are currently spearheading the remake of the original Witcher title.
According to the reveal, players will step back into the boots of Geralt of Rivia—a distinct departure from the upcoming The Witcher 4, which is set to feature Ciri as the protagonist. The subtitle, Songs of the Past, hints at a narrative that either predates the conclusion of the main campaign or delves deeply into the Witcher’s storied history. Regardless of the timeline, the global fanbase is undoubtedly eager to return to the rich, dark fantasy world crafted by Andrzej Sapkowski.
As for the implications regarding The Witcher 4, the industry remains hopeful. Since Songs of the Past is a collaborative development project, it remains plausible that CD Projekt Red could launch both the expansion and the next mainline installment within the 2027 window. For now, players will need to wait for further updates, which are expected to arrive in the late summer of 2026.
