Doug Cockle, the iconic voice behind Geralt of Rivia in CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher series, is set to reprise his legendary role for the newly announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansion, Songs of the Past. However, if you are looking for insider details or narrative hints, you will be disappointed—Cockle maintains he is just as much in the dark as the rest of the fanbase.
In a recent interview with Polygon, Cockle admitted he had an inkling that the Polish developer was brewing something behind the scenes. “There was a certain atmosphere suggesting CDPR had something in the works, but I hadn’t the faintest idea what,” he remarked, noting that he initially speculated it might be another standalone title akin to 2018’s Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. The expansion’s announcement felt less like a shock and more like the confirmation of a long-standing industry rumor.
“I was genuinely thrilled when they confirmed a Witcher 3 expansion that would serve as a narrative bridge between the current trilogy and The Witcher 4,” Cockle said. His sentiment aligns with recent statements from CDPR co-CEO Michał Nowakowski, who described Songs of the Past as a deliberate prologue designed to weave the threads of the previous games into the franchise’s future.
As for plot specifics, Cockle is keeping his cards close to his chest—largely because he has none to play. “My knowledge is limited to exactly what the public has seen in the press releases,” he clarified. “I’m just as eager to see how it all unfolds as the players are.”
When pressed on whether he has already stepped into the recording booth for the project, the actor offered a playful retort: “I haven’t—but even if I had, I wouldn’t be at liberty to say.” Such is the nature of the industry, where non-disclosure agreements and strict embargoes are simply part of the job description.
Regarding the highly anticipated remake of the original 2007 The Witcher, currently in production at Fool’s Theory, Cockle remains unconfirmed for the lead role. “I don’t know my status yet, but I certainly hope to be involved,” he said, expressing a sincere desire to lend his voice to the reimagined origins of the series.
While the remake currently lacks a firm release date—expected to follow the launch of The Witcher 4, which is slated for no earlier than 2027—Cockle’s commitment to the character remains steadfast. “I adore Geralt, and I would be honored to continue portraying him for as long as I am welcome,” he concluded. “May the journey with the White Wolf continue for a long time yet.”
