Gears of War: E-Day Appears to Disappoint Microsoft on Steam
Gears of War: E-Day peaked at just over 31,500 concurrent players on Steam following strong reviews and a major promotional campaign, falling notably short of Microsoft’s expectations.
Despite stellar press reviews and top spots on pre-release sales charts, the new Gears of War failed to attract a massive audience on the leading PC platform. Following years of anticipation for a return to the series’ roots and massive production costs, the industry views this outcome as a serious disappointment.
A warning sign appeared during early access when the peak concurrent player count reached about 20,000. Expectations pointed to the full release significantly boosting the player base, but after the removal of temporal restrictions, the figure rose only slightly above 31,500.

For Xbox, this result is particularly unpleasant following the weak financial performance of Halo. At the same time, E-Day did set a franchise record on Steam, substantially outperforming the launch of Reloaded. Against expectations for a flagship project, the outcome looks modest. By comparison, the new franchise The Blood of Dawnwalker drew nearly 80,000 players.
