Flying a Helicopter Is 2026’s Most Stressful Gaming Experience
Video games have delivered plenty of white-knuckle moments in 2026. Fleeing from a massive, bloated abomination as Grace Ashcroft in Resident Evil Requiem, facing off against Damien Webb deep within the subterranean tunnels of 007 First Light, or watching your stamina slip away on the unforgiving vertical cliffs of Cairn all test your nerves. Yet, none of those compare to the sheer anxiety of taking the controls of a helicopter in Wardogs.
You might assume that piloting a chopper in a first-person shooter would be straightforward, especially when its primary function is simply to transport you to the front lines. Having logged countless hours in the cockpit across Grand Theft Auto V, a handful of entries in the Battlefield franchise, and numerous flying machines throughout the Just Cause series, I figured I knew what to expect. But Wardogs rewrites the rulebook.
First and foremost, Kane Allard, a senior producer at Bulkhead, revealed during our Gamescom 2026 interview that the flight mechanics in Wardogs were actually built with the help of a professional aeronautical engineer. “A cornerstone of the experience is vehicular combat and travel, and we wanted them to feel exceptionally realistic and grounded,” Allard explained. “To accomplish that, we enlisted an aerospace engineer to establish the foundational physics for our helicopters. It instills them with genuine weight, makes them thoroughly engaging to master, and establishes a genuine skill ceiling where dedicated players can truly refine their piloting abilities.”

It is hardly surprising, then, that operating them is remarkably demanding. Nowadays, I can ferry teammates across the map without incident after spending countless hours drilling maneuvers at the shooting range—an endeavor that ultimately inspired me to write Polygon’s official pilot’s handbook for Wardogs. Initially, however, taking flight was an absolute nightmare. More specifically, the descent and landing sequence was pure terror. Maintaining altitude and cruising forward is manageable enough, but executing a rapid, controlled, and safe arrival that allows your squadmates to disembark under fire is an entirely different beast.
The tension doesn’t stem solely from the mechanics of flight; it comes from the crushing awareness that a single mistake destroys a $6,250 financial investment and instantly wipes out every passenger who placed their life in your hands. Unless a dedicated medic happens to be nearby—an unlikely scenario unless you crash directly inside a heavily contested zone—the specialized kits carried by your teammates are lost entirely, amounting to a collective penalty worth tens of thousands of dollars. Once you botch a flight that badly, nobody will ever trust you behind the stick again, forcing you to ride shotgun in someone else’s aircraft in utter embarrassment.
While select aviators treat aerial navigation as a refined art form, much like Instagram creator designatedpilot, I prefer a simpler approach. Ensuring my crew arrives at the objective in one piece is achievement enough for me, and even then, the constant weight of responsibility is exhausting. Unless I’m actively seeking an adrenaline spike, I’ll happily leave the skies to the professionals and stick firmly to ground transport.
