MUNA has officially secured the top spot in this week’s readers’ poll for the best new music release.
Following a vote conducted this past Friday (May 8), fans overwhelmingly selected the LA-based indie-pop trio’s latest album, Dancing on the Wall, as their favorite project of the week.
The album claimed the number one position in a competitive field, standing out alongside highly anticipated releases such as Charli xcx’s bold stylistic shift “Rock Music,” as well as new full-length projects from J Balvin and Ryan Castro, Lykke Li, Little Simz, and The Chainsmokers. The week also featured fresh singles from notable artists including The Last Dinner Party, PJ Morton, and Ashley McBryde.
This achievement marks a milestone for the group—comprised of Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin—as they re-emerge with their third studio album via Saddest Factory Records. This release follows their self-titled 2022 breakout, which garnered widespread critical acclaim and solidified their mainstream presence, bolstered by the success of their Phoebe Bridgers collaboration, “Silk Chiffon.” With Dancing on the Wall, the band continues to refine their signature sound—a blend of euphoric melodies and raw, candid lyricism—while the title track has already established itself as one of the year’s most infectious and dance-ready anthems.
Securing second place was Charli xcx’s “Rock Music,” which represents a sharp pivot from the aesthetic that fueled her 2024 breakout success.
“If I had released another track leaning heavily into dance, it would have felt uninspired and emotionally draining,” she remarked in an interview with British Vogue in April, just prior to the single’s drop. “For me, the intrigue lies in exploring new perspectives and pushing the boundaries of my own sound.” The track serves as a precursor to her next, yet-to-be-announced album.
