Expedition 33 fans thrilled as Charlie Cox finally plays the RPG

For the past year, Charlie Cox has been relentlessly questioned by fans regarding Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The Daredevil star’s involvement in the acclaimed RPG had reached near-mythical status, largely fueled by the irony that, despite the widespread praise for his performance, the actor hadn’t actually experienced the game for himself. At times, it was clear that Cox was genuinely bewildered by the intense fervor surrounding his role.

Cox provided the voice for Gustave, the protagonist players navigate during the opening chapters. Although Gustave’s presence is limited, Cox’s poignant and earnest delivery led many to view him as the emotional core of the narrative—a significant compliment for a title as lauded as Expedition 33.

However, the overwhelming acclaim left Cox feeling like an imposter. Months after the game’s launch, he candidly admitted to feeling like a “fraud.” He noted that he had secured the role with relative ease, spending just four hours in the recording booth. He frequently deflected the praise, urging fans to celebrate Maxence Cazorla, the motion-capture actor whose physical performance he felt truly deserved the accolades.

Beyond his humility, Cox made no secret of his lack of gaming background. When a fan mentioned “platinum-ing” the game while asking for an autograph, Cox admitted he had no concept of the term. He confessed to interviewers that the daunting prospect of a 50-hour campaign was intimidating, and his lack of familiarity with the plot became a recurring punchline among his peers, who were frequently grilled about when he might finally pick up the controller.

A full year later, the wait is finally over. Speaking with GamesRadar, the actor revealed he has finally dipped his toes into the experience. While he hasn’t reached the end, he confirmed he has played enough to encounter the game’s “Gommage” mechanic and get a feel for the world.

“I’m not particularly skilled at it, as it requires a specific set of talents, but I have played it,” Cox shared.

“It didn’t really feel like me,” he continued. “I didn’t perceive it as myself; I simply viewed it as Gustave.”

Whether Cox ever decides to dive deeper into the full Expedition 33 experience remains to be seen. Regardless, he can at least rest easy knowing he has finally satisfied the curiosity of his fanbase.
