Bernie Lynch, the visionary co-founder and frontman of the iconic Australian pop ensemble Eurogliders, has passed away at the age of 72. Lynch, who steered the band through a string of mid-80s successes—most notably the international hit “Heaven (Must Be There)”—died on Thursday, March 12, following a rigorous battle with throat cancer.

Vocalist Grace Knight, who shared both a professional partnership and a former marriage with Lynch, shared a poignant reflection on their decades-long collaboration. “I can’t begin to count the thousands of stages Eurogliders stood on over the years, but for every single performance, Bernie was right there beside me,” Knight expressed. “It has been an extraordinary journey, and I feel immense pride and gratitude for the life and music we shared.”

Lynch established Eurogliders in Perth in 1980, tapping into the city’s then-thriving post-punk and alternative rock landscape. The group’s breakthrough came with the 1984 release of “Heaven,” a standout track from their album This Island. The song ascended to No. 2 on the ARIA Charts and has maintained its cultural resonance for over forty years. Recently, the track found a new generation of listeners through a prominent national real estate campaign and was recently highlighted by music historians as one of the most masterful, yet overlooked, compositions of the decade.

The band’s golden era produced several other domestic staples, including the 1985 hit “We Will Together,” featuring Lynch on lead vocals, and 1986’s “Can’t Wait to See You,” before the group eventually went their separate ways at the close of the 1980s.

Though they officially disbanded decades ago, Eurogliders reunited on several occasions, including a mid-2000s album project and a spot on the Countdown Spectacular tour. Most recently, they captivated fans at the 2023 Sunset Sounds festival.

Lynch was diagnosed with cancer in 2024. While initial treatments appeared promising, the illness ultimately progressed to his bones and vital organs. Knight remembered her longtime friend as a “remarkably kind and selfless soul” who was known for his warmth and hospitality, often taking over the kitchen to cook for friends or being the first to offer support during difficult times.

Ultimately, Lynch’s legacy is defined by his craftsmanship as a songwriter. “Without Bernie’s creative spark, Eurogliders simply wouldn’t have existed,” Knight noted. “He wrote songs as a young man that still permeate the airwaves forty years later. To see audiences still singing along to his lyrics is a testament to his incredible contribution to our musical heritage.”
