R&B veteran Eric Benét is voicing his frustrations regarding public figures who exhibit what he describes as a profound lack of gratitude toward their supporters, specifically singling out rising pop sensation Chappell Roan.

In a candid video shared on Tuesday, March 24, the singer-songwriter elaborated on one of his “primary grievances”: celebrities who fail to show basic courtesy or acknowledgment when approached by fans in public spaces. Benét argued that many stars lack the humility to offer a simple greeting or a photograph to those who admire them.

“If it is such a burden for you to be recognized by someone who genuinely adores your work, I find that behavior inexcusable,” Benét remarked. He emphasized that the audience is the foundation of a celebrity’s success, providing them with a “privileged existence” and “wealth that the vast majority of the world will never know.” He added, “They simply want to be seen for a fleeting moment by the person they support, you piece of s–t.”

While Benét conceded that there are certainly instances where privacy is paramount—such as during family time or meals—he claimed certain artists are “notorious” for being consistently dismissive. During the video, he pointedly coughed and named Chappell Roan as a prime example of this conduct.

The “Spend My Life with You” singer suggested a collective remedy for such attitudes, proposing that fans should reconsider their financial support for artists who treat them poorly. “I believe the fans of these celebrities should collectively decide to relieve them of the ‘burdens’ of fame and fortune by stopping the consumption of their music and products,” he suggested.

This critique follows a recent viral controversy involving Roan and 11-year-old Ada Law, the daughter of actor Jude Law and Catherine Harding. Allegations surfaced that a security guard shouted at the child for smiling at Roan at a hotel in São Paulo. While soccer star Jorginho, Harding’s partner, claimed the encounter left his stepdaughter distraught, Roan later clarified that the security officer was a third-party hire rather than part of her personal team, asserting she was unaware of the girl’s presence at the time.

A representative for Roan reiterated that the singer did not authorize any aggressive interactions and maintains a strict “zero tolerance” policy regarding hostility toward her fanbase. Nevertheless, Harding has publicly called for the “Pink Pony Club” singer to take greater accountability for the conduct of those working in her vicinity.

The debate highlights an ongoing tension in Roan’s meteoric rise, as she has previously been vocal about setting boundaries against “toxic” fan behavior and maintaining her personal space in public.
