End of Millennia: Paradox Ends Support for Failed Civilization Rival

Paradox has formally discontinued support for Millennia — a 4X strategy positioned as a contender to Civilization. Eighteen months after release, the company has chosen to stop issuing further updates and fixes. Update 8 is the final patch.

The game did improve noticeably from its launch state, but it never resolved its core shortcomings. The chief problem is underwhelming artificial intelligence: opponents struggle to manage civilizations in the late game, resulting in repetitive and unbalanced matches. No further improvements in this area will be made.

Millennia was unable to retain a substantial player base: according to Steam, its overall positive review rate since March 2024 is 60% (27% over the last 30 days). Media scores were similarly guarded — an average rating of 6.6 out of 10.

Thus ends Paradox’s attempt to build a rival to the Civilization series — without ongoing updates, the game effectively loses any realistic chance of a second life.
