For years, Electronic Arts has utilized its annual soccer franchise to simulate the World Cup tournament, forecasting the champion well before the opening whistle. Even following the conclusion of its official partnership with FIFA, the publisher’s predictive prowess remains remarkably sharp; EA has now correctly identified the tournament victor five times in a row.

Spain’s 1-0 triumph over Argentina this past Sunday, which secured their second World Cup title, extends EA’s impeccable streak to a 16-year run. The studio’s simulation famously pegged Spain as the winner in 2010, and it continued this run of perfection by accurately naming Germany, France, and Argentina in 2014, 2018, and 2022, respectively.

EA broadcast its prediction for a Spanish victory on June 6, just days before the tournament commenced. This milestone marks the first successful forecast since the publisher parted ways with FIFA, the global governing body. The current iteration of the series, EA Sports FC 26, features an unlicensed international tournament mode dubbed “The World’s Game,” which mirrors the authentic rosters and national teams competing on the world stage. Meanwhile, the officially licensed alternative, FIFA World Cup, opted for a simplified mobile experience streamed via Netflix.

The secret behind EA’s simulation engine lies in a massive repository of granular data, ranging from individual player ratings to collective team dynamics. By running sophisticated AI-driven models through every stage of the tournament—from group play to the final knockout matches—the game is able to extrapolate likely outcomes. While EA applies similar methodology to other properties like the Super Bowl (Madden) and the Stanley Cup (NHL), those simulations have historically proven far less reliable than their soccer counterparts.
