Disney Quietly Prepares to Shut Down Major Streaming Service

If you find Disney’s current and future streaming strategy somewhat bewildering, it’s likely because the transition is already well underway. The future isn’t just approaching; it is currently unfolding.

Over the past few years, Disney has systematically folded more Hulu programming into Disney Plus, eroding the boundaries between two platforms that once felt entirely distinct. Now, recent reporting provides the most transparent view yet of where this consolidation is headed.

Back in May, Bloomberg reported that Disney had explored the concept of a “super app”—a singular hub for streaming, retail, and park ticketing. However, while those high-level discussions have occurred, Business Insider suggests the company’s immediate priorities are much more focused and carry significant implications for the average subscriber.

What is actually shifting between Hulu and Disney Plus?

During a recent company town hall, Adam Smith, Disney’s chief product and technology officer for Entertainment and ESPN, clarified that the primary objective is to deepen the Hulu integration within the Disney Plus interface. Internally codenamed “Project Gemini,” the initiative aims to create a cohesive, unified experience for users of both platforms.

Although Disney has maintained that it has no immediate plans to shutter the Hulu app, internal documentation seen by Business Insider suggests that Hulu’s standalone infrastructure will eventually be phased out in favor of the Disney Plus ecosystem. This prospect raises a host of practical concerns regarding account management, cross-platform watchlists, parental controls, and billing consolidation for current users.

While the services are more interconnected than ever, a full-scale integration remains on the horizon. Nonetheless, the motivation behind this move is becoming increasingly clear.

The future of the Disney-Hulu synergy

Disney’s trajectory has long favored a centralized ecosystem that bridges its streaming and sports offerings. A truly unified service could eliminate the friction of toggling between apps, but it also risks diluting the unique identity that Hulu has cultivated over the years.

Disney Plus is synonymous with tentpole franchises and family-oriented content, whereas Hulu has established itself as the home for prestige dramas, FX series, and edgier programming. If Hulu becomes merely a sub-brand within the Disney Plus library, there is an existential question regarding how that will alter audience perception and the perceived prestige of its original content.

For now, subscribers don’t need to take any immediate action. However, if you are a regular user of both platforms, it is a prudent time to ensure your account details are consistent across both services. Should this integration accelerate, the most profound change may simply be the day you realize you’ve stopped opening the Hulu app entirely.
