Demi Lovato Sets the Record Straight on That Ironic “Heart Attack” Performance

When Demi Lovato performed her high-octane hit “Heart Attack” at a 2024 event for the American Heart Association (AHA), the internet was quick to point out the staggering irony. As it turns out, the singer was just as skeptical about the song choice as the public was.
During a revealing interview on the Elvis Duran Show this Thursday, the pop powerhouse finally addressed the controversy surrounding their set at the Women Red Dress Collection Concert. Contrary to the assumption that it was a lapse in judgment, Lovato explained that the decision was made by the event’s organizers.
“I want to clarify that they actually requested I sing that,” Lovato shared. “I even flagged it beforehand. I was like, ‘Are we sure? Isn’t this, like, the wrong vibe for this specific cause?’”
Despite their reservations, Lovato was told that the audience specifically wanted to hear the 2013 Billboard Hot 100 staple. “They were like, ‘No, they want to hear it.’ So I said, ‘Okay…’ and then, of course, the internet exploded with people asking why I would choose that song. I was sitting there thinking, ‘Y’all, it wasn’t my call! I tried to warn them!’”
This candid explanation provides a definitive answer to a viral moment that has lingered for two years. At the time of the performance, a spokesperson for Lovato defended the set to Entertainment Weekly, describing it as a “sensitive moment” intended to celebrate the women in attendance. The representative noted that Lovato opened the performance with a thoughtful introduction regarding the “mind and heart connection.”
Beyond revisiting past headlines, Lovato is currently focused on her latest venture: a debut cookbook titled One Plate at a Time. This follows a successful musical run late last year with the release of the album It’s Not That Deep, which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200.
