DC Studios Confirms First Details of Mister Miracle Series
DC Universe co-head Peter Safran has confirmed the two lead actors for the upcoming Mister Miracle adaptation, and the animated show now has a first look. The promo image shows Mister Miracle staring into the eyes of his longtime love interest, Big Barda, while a silhouette approaches in the background. The silhouette is Darkseid.
The DCU’s other co-head, James Gunn, officially confirmed Safran’s off-the-cuff comments about the series. He welcomed Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) as Mister Miracle and Mackenzie Davis (Below, Station Eleven) as Big Barda. Gunn said Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios will produce Mister Miracle. He also reiterated that comic author Tom King will helm the series.
The show will adapt the Eisner-winning run of Mister Miracle by King and Mitch Gerads, which ran for 12 issues between 2017 and 2019. King most recently co-wrote and co-created the TV series Lanterns.
Safran spoke about King’s work on the series: “I think that Tom King really learned a lot in his season of co-creating and executive producing Lanterns, and he adapted his book Mister Miracle fully on his own and wrote all eight episodes, and I think it’s just dynamite.”
According to Safran, the series will run for eight 30-minute episodes, with potential for additional seasons. DC Studios is currently aiming for a 2028 premiere.
What is Mister Miracle about?
Mister Miracle dates back decades, but most modern superhero fans probably know the character from King’s 2017 comic. It follows Scott Free, a New God (an alien species with functional immortality), as he builds a new life on Earth. His fellow Apokolips emigrant, Big Barda, lives there with him.
DC offers the following description of the comic:
Scott Free is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. So great that he escaped Granny Goodness’ gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, the former Female Fury known as Big Barda. Using the stage alter ego of Mister Miracle, he has made a career for himself showing off his acrobatic escape techniques. He even caught the attention of the Justice League, which counted him among its ranks.
You might say Scott Free has everything…so why isn’t it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick—except one. He has never escaped death. Is it even possible? Our hero is going to have to kill himself if he wants to find out.
What else is in the works from DC?
DC Studios has several announced projects in the works. The most immediate is the horror film Clayface, which arrives Oct. 23. The next movie with a firm release date is the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, planned for July 9, 2027.
The Batman Part 2 is not part of the DCU, but DC Studios hopes to finally release it on Feb. 18, 2028. On the TV side, The People v. Gorilla Grodd is a mockumentary-style show planned for mid-2027. Other projects in development without release dates include a Swamp Thing movie and Batman’s The Brave and the Bold.
