David Harbour has finally offered his perspective on Lily Allen’s emotionally candid album, West End Girl. The record, which dissects the dissolution of their four-year marriage, includes pointed accusations regarding the actor’s alleged infidelity.

In a wide-ranging conversation with Variety published this Wednesday (June 10), Harbour reflected on the surreal experience of having his private life scrutinized by the public following the album’s October release. He openly admitted that the aftermath triggered a significant mental health struggle, intensified by his experiences with bipolar disorder. “I firmly believe every artist has the privilege of mining their own life for creative expression, and I hold her in high regard for doing just that,” the Stranger Things star shared.

“I prefer not to elaborate further,” he added. “My private life is something I deeply value, despite the public’s frequent intrusions. I also feel a responsibility to protect the privacy of those I’m involved with. Relationships are inherently complex. While I respect her artistic choice to process her experiences, that narrative is not my own.”

On tracks like “West End Girl” and “Madeline,” Allen recounts the fraying of their relationship, highlighting tensions that arose when she secured a lead role in a West End production and her husband proposed an open marriage. She further alleges that her partner crossed the agreed-upon boundaries of their arrangement, famously labeling him a “sex addict” on the track “Pussy Palace.”

The album proved to be a critical triumph, marking a resurgence in Allen’s career and climbing to No. 10 on the Top Album Sales chart. Speaking to Interview magazine previously, Allen explained that the project served as a cathartic exercise. “It’s visceral, but it’s a blend of truth and imagination,” she noted. “I was processing a difficult period, but I’ve moved past the anger and the confusion. Revenge isn’t my objective anymore.”

For Harbour, the release prompted a difficult period of self-reflection. “I went through a genuine breakdown,” he confessed to Variety. “Mental health is incredibly complex. I think most people have someone in their life who struggles with these episodes, and it’s understandably confusing for those on the outside.”

Addressing his behavior during high-pressure situations, he noted, “Extreme stress can lead to erratic conduct, which is a source of deep shame and embarrassment for me. It’s an involuntary struggle that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.”

Harbour also dispelled rumors regarding his Stranger Things co-star Millie Bobby Brown, following reports that she had filed a harassment complaint against him during the filming of the final season. “It was a minor misunderstanding that we resolved through direct communication,” he explained. “We’ve patched things up completely. There’s a decade-long bond there—we truly care for one another, and I look forward to audiences seeing more of our collaboration.”

Allen and Harbour, who married in 2020 after connecting on the dating app Raya, announced their separation in early 2025. Today, Allen is focused on her professional trajectory, currently trekking through a tour in support of West End Girl, which concludes in Perth, Australia, this November.
