David Harbour Clarifies Spoiler Comments About Avengers: Doomsday

Ever since Robert Downey Jr. was announced as Doctor Doom in December’s Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel fans have wondered how the film will handle the casting within the multiverse. Would Victor von Doom be a variant of Tony Stark, the character Downey played for over a decade? Would he keep his mask on, so Avengers like Steve Rogers and Thor wouldn’t have to explain why their new enemy looks so much like their old friend?

David Harbour seemingly spoiled the answer over the summer. Now the Thunderbolts* star is singing a different tune and denying he ever did.

What Harbour said in August

In August, Variety interviewed Harbour about several of his projects. Asked for an out-of-context line from Doomsday, Harbour said, while pointing, “You … are Tony Stark.”

If that line is real, the Red Guardian calling someone Tony Stark would suggest Downey’s Doom takes off his mask in Doomsday and shows a face recognizable as the MCU hero. Harbour now says he never said it.

Harbour’s denial

Speaking with ScreenRant at New York Comic Con, Harbour played coy when asked about the line. “Did I say that I said that?” he said. “I think you guys make this stuff up.”

He said the line he actually gave was the Red Guardian counting down from five. According to Harbour, “something very important happens” when the count ends.

“I don’t know about the Tony Stark thing,” Harbour said.

Maybe the original line was a miscommunication. Maybe the Marvel Studios spoiler police got to Harbour and gave him a lesson in damage control. Marvel might even assign Benedict Cumberbatch to watch over Harbour during interviews, as he did for Tom Holland.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters in two months

The wait to see how Avengers: Doomsday treats Doctor Doom’s character and appearance is nearly over. The first Avengers movie in seven years brings together old MCU favorites like Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, newcomers like the Fantastic Four, and veterans of the Fox movies like Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier.

Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters Dec. 18.
