‘Dare to Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical’ Heading to Broadway

Who is ready to inject some accordion-fueled absurdity into the Great White Way? The legendary king of musical parody, “Weird Al” Yankovic, is officially Broadway-bound.

On Tuesday, May 12, it was announced that a brand-new jukebox musical centered on the Grammy-winning icon’s storied catalog is in active development. Titled Dare to Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical, the production will weave an original narrative penned by Tony-nominated writers Scott Brown and Anthony King (known for their work on Beetlejuice), crafted in close collaboration with Yankovic himself. Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, celebrated for Moulin Rouge! The Musical, has been tapped to direct this Seaview production.

“Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve harbored a secret desire to integrate myself into the New York theater scene,” Yankovic remarked in the official announcement. “Plus, theatergoers are always lamenting that Broadway is ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,’ and I believe this musical is the perfect remedy to that glaring void.”

The show, taking its title from Yankovic’s 1985 album, promises to pull from his massive catalog spanning over four decades. Fans can certainly anticipate theatrical renditions of his iconic chart-toppers, such as “Eat It,” the Amish-country spoof “Amish Paradise,” and the medical masterpiece, “Like a Surgeon.”

“I’ve been a devoted fan of Al’s work since Dare to Be Stupid first dropped, and my admiration has only grown,” said director Alex Timbers. “Collaborating with one of my comedic idols to translate his beloved songs into an original stage narrative is a genuine dream. What we are developing with Scott and Anthony is subversive, meta, and entirely unexpected. I cannot wait to share this vision with the world.”

Additional details regarding the production timeline and casting are expected to be announced at a later date.

This project marks another milestone in a recent surge of mainstream interest in the artist. In 2022, Daniel Radcliffe famously portrayed him in the hit biopic-spoof Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and in June 2025, Yankovic graced the cover of Billboard’s Indie Power Issue.
