FromSoftware’s masterfully crafted samurai epic, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, is officially receiving the animated treatment. Titled Sekiro: No Defeat, the upcoming series is scheduled for a 2026 debut as a Crunchyroll exclusive. This ambitious adaptation is a collaborative effort between studios Arch, Qzil.la, and Studio Betta, promising a faithful yet fresh perspective on the “Wolf’s” journey.
The second trailer, which premiered at SXSW, shifts the focus toward a more atmospheric and poignant tone. The footage showcases a sumptuous, hand-drawn aesthetic that perfectly mirrors the cyclical nature of life and death central to the original game’s narrative. Fans will recognize a “greatest hits” gallery of iconic boss encounters, including breathtaking glimpses of The Owl, Gyoubu Oniwa, the Corrupted Monk, and Genichiro Ashina. Based on this preview, Sekiro: No Defeat appears ready to embrace the visceral combat and uncompromising violence that defined FromSoftware’s most direct storytelling experience to date.
Crunchyroll has provided an official synopsis for the series:
Set within a Japan fractured by relentless internal conflict, the story centers on Ashina—a land steeped in ancient myth and sacred power. Two decades after the legendary Sword Saint Isshin Ashina seized the region in a violent uprising, a new shadow looms: the Interior Ministry. In a desperate bid to safeguard his legacy, Isshin’s grandson, Genichiro, reaches for a forbidden, heretical strength. Standing between total collapse and survival are a kidnapped boy of divine lineage and his devoted protector—a one-armed shinobi known as Sekiro.
This is the chronicle of a master and his servant on a mission to restore harmony to a nation on the brink of ruin.
Series director Kenichi Kutsuna expressed his dedication to the project’s visual identity, stating: “By leaning into the traditional artistry of 2D animation, we aim to reach a level of kinetic beauty that transcends mere ‘coolness’ to become something truly evocative and profound.”
While an exact launch date remains under wraps, Sekiro: No Defeat is slated to arrive on Crunchyroll sometime in 2026. A recent social media update from the streaming platform teased that the release is “coming soon.”
