Welcome to the Latest Edition of Our Community Newsletter!

In this enhanced version of our community updates, we will continue to showcase a variety of mods from newsletter to newsletter but also delve deeper into community contributions, including streamers, videos, shorts, and artwork.

This edition marks the beginning of a new series: interviews with notable modders who have significantly impacted the Ready or Not modding scene.

Kicking off our series, we are thrilled to interview Jerry the Weekend Gunfighter, the creator behind the most extensive near-total conversion mod on Nexus, boasting 512k lifetime downloads since its re-introduction with the 1.0 release of Ready or Not.

Jerry’s mod offers an impressive blend of modularity and scope, allowing players to customize nearly every aspect of the game, often transforming Ready or Not into a completely new experience.

The following interview has been edited for clarity and coherence.

Q&A with Jerry the Weekend Gunfighter

Q: Can you introduce yourself briefly?

A: I’m Jerry, also known as the Weekend Gunfighter in the RON community. The nickname stems from my busy schedule that only allows me to indulge in gaming over weekends. I’m a military and tactics enthusiast, a passion ignited by Operation Neptune Spear in 2011. I’ve invested considerable time and energy into studying these subjects. During my less busy years, I enjoyed participating in milsim activities and collecting high-end gear.

Q: Did you have any background in modding or game development before working on Gunfighter?

A: Yes, I’ve dabbled in modding primarily for ARMA3 and an older air combat game from the 2000-2010s called Strike Fighters 2. Although I don’t have any famous or remarkable works to my name, I engaged in modeling, texturing, and scripting. Gunfighter marks my first venture into using Unreal Engine.

Q: What inspired you to create Gunfighter?

A: Over the past decade, I’ve been playing military/tactics games like ARMA3 and SWAT4. Before Ready or Not, SWAT4 was the only game focused on CQB environments. I longed for a modern CQB game. When I saw the RON trailer in 2017, I knew it was what I had been waiting for. Ready or Not has since become one of my favorite games. I enjoy playing games in a “close to reality” manner, although I acknowledge the limitations of fully achieving realism in games.

While playing RON, I noticed certain design elements I didn’t entirely agree with, such as the high weapon position prevalent in many FPS games. I aimed to modify these aspects for a gameplay style I found more fitting. So, in July 2022, without any prior experience with Unreal Engine, I decided to learn and create Gunfighter.

Regarding Gunfighter, I always emphasize that it strives for a realistic gunfight experience based on gameplay. The core changes involve adjusting weapon positions to resemble real-life operator usage, refining night vision capabilities, enhancing injury feedback, and enabling features like using NVGs and gas masks simultaneously. While “realism” is subjective, I believe in balancing it with gameplay to avoid counterproductive effects.

If interested, I’ve written several articles explaining the design choices in the mod, all rooted in logic and practical experience.

Q: You’re quite reasonable in acknowledging that your mod is about offering a different gameplay experience rather than making the game “better.” If you could add something [a new mechanic, set of equipment, map, etc.] to Ready or Not, what would it be?

A: I could list dozens of ideas, but to keep it brief:

  • 1. Mechanic: Laser and flashlight combo, with one button to switch and another to activate.
  • 2. Equipment: An option to mount an ATAK phone on my vest would be fantastic. Void has significantly improved gear options, so no complaints there.
  • 3. Map: While RON’s map quality is top-notch, I wish doors could open beyond 90° to enhance door procedure techniques, especially point one.

Your suggestions for future interviews with other modding community members are welcome in the Discussion thread.

We eagerly anticipate the new content the community will create as we continue to update the game and expand modders’ capabilities.
