‘Clair Obscur’ Developers Seek ‘Fair Solution’ in Dispute With Comic Author

While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has enjoyed a meteoric rise as Sandfall Interactive’s inaugural title, its journey has been punctuated by persistent friction. After navigating a previous scandal involving AI-generated assets that were eventually scrubbed from the game, the studio is now facing criticism over a trademark dispute. French author Olivier Gay claims the developer is compelling him to cease distribution of his newly released graphic novel, L’ Académie Clair-Obscur.

In a detailed thread shared on X, Gay revealed he received a formal legal notice from Sandfall’s attorneys. The letter reportedly accuses him of “riding on the game’s undeniable success” and demands he stop selling the comic, which is published by Drakoo. Gay expressed frustration, noting that he originally pitched the concept in 2019 and finalized the contract in early 2024, months before Expedition 33 was officially unveiled to the public.

Despite the lack of narrative overlap between his magic-school setting and Sandfall’s RPG world, Gay has decided to yield. “I neither have the energy nor the financial resources to engage in a protracted legal battle,” he explained, adding that the series will move forward under a rebranded title. He remains hopeful that the work will find its audience regardless of the forced name change.

“Hello everyone, we’ve seen the discussions… We’re in contact with the publisher and Olivier to find a fair solution for everyone.”

Sandfall Interactive addressed the burgeoning backlash on Monday, stating they are currently negotiating with both Gay and the publisher to resolve the matter amicably. When pressed for further details, the studio pointed to their public statement as their final word on the situation for now.

Industry observers have pointed out that the core of the conflict might lie in the visual presentation rather than the prose. While the stories are worlds apart, the typography used for the graphic novel’s title shares a striking resemblance to the game’s branding. Some social media users noted that a casual consumer might easily mistake the comic for an official tie-in. Currently, no such comics exist for Expedition 33, though the game’s marketing has included high-end art books and vinyl soundtracks.

The phrase “Clair Obscur” is the French equivalent of the Italian chiaroscuro, a Renaissance art technique defined by the dramatic contrast between light and shadow. This aesthetic is fundamental to Expedition 33’s identity. Game director Guillaume Broche has previously indicated that “Clair Obscur” is intended to serve as an umbrella brand for the studio’s future projects, with Expedition 33 representing only the first chapter in a broader franchise.
