Cher infused Studio 8H with a heavy dose of holiday splendor during the latest episode of Saturday Night Live.
The 79-year-old legendary pop icon made a triumphant return as the musical guest on December 20, marking her first time headlining the show’s music segments in 38 years. Closing out the 2025 season alongside host and Wicked star Ariana Grande, Cher proved her timeless appeal remains unmatched.
Delivering a high-energy set, Cher performed the infectious “DJ Play a Christmas Song” followed by a rock-infused rendition of Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run.” Both selections are featured on her 2023 festive record, Christmas, which previously claimed the top spot on Billboard’s Top Holiday Albums chart.
The album, which stands as her 27th studio release, offers a sophisticated blend of seasonal classics and original compositions. The project is notable for its star-studded guest list, including Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Bublé, Darlene Love, and Tyga.
Discussing the project with Billboard last year, Cher noted that the tracks feel like “great songs” rather than typical holiday standards. “I’m incredibly particular and rarely satisfied with my own work,” she admitted. “But people genuinely love these songs, and I’m thrilled with how they turned out.”
Prior to this weekend, Cher’s last appearance as a musical guest was in November 1987. While she has made occasional cameos over the decades—including a 1992 appearance and a spot in this year’s 50th-anniversary special—this performance served as a full-circle moment for the Oscar winner. She also recently bolstered her holiday discography with the release of a new single titled “Christmas Is Here.”
The evening took an emotional turn during a sketch featuring Bowen Yang. Playing a Delta Sky Club employee on his final shift, Yang led a soulful version of the Eagles’ “Please Come Home for Christmas.” The performance evolved into a powerhouse trio as Ariana Grande and Cher joined him for the farewell moment.
Earlier that day, Yang officially announced via Instagram that the December 20 broadcast would be his final episode as a cast member. “I am profoundly grateful for every moment spent here,” Yang shared, reflecting on his growth and the “human error” that makes the show unique.
Following the winter hiatus, Saturday Night Live is scheduled to return on January 17, 2026, featuring A$AP Rocky as the musical guest.
