A peculiar pop-culture feud has erupted involving an unlikely combatant: Peppa Pig. The animated icon finds herself at the center of a social media storm after throwing shade at singer-songwriter Clairo during a recent appearance on Pitchfork’s “Over/Under” series, prompting immediate backlash from industry heavyweights Charli xcx and PinkPantheress.
The tension surfaced on Tuesday (July 7) when the cartoon protagonist was asked to assess Clairo’s career. Peppa didn’t mince words, offering a dismissive side-eye and coolly remarking, “I don’t know her.”
Fans were quick to call out the jab, and Charli xcx was among the first to leap to Clairo’s defense. In a text exchange shared by Clairo on X, Charli rallied behind her peer, jokingly suggesting, “Let’s f— her up.”
PinkPantheress also entered the fray. Although Peppa had offered a backhanded compliment regarding her, calling her “underrated” while noting that she and the artist share a pink aesthetic, PinkPantheress remained unflinching. Replying on X, the “Stateside” singer made her stance clear: “ain’t sh– sweet until you put respect on clairo.”
The origin of this bizarre beef likely traces back to 2019, when Clairo sat for her own “Over/Under” interview. At the time, she offered a puzzled critique of Peppa’s physical proportions, noting, “She’s 7’1″ … she’s the tallest pig in the world. I’mma say underrated, just because I don’t know any taller pigs.” It appears the porcine star may have held a grudge over the remark for seven years.
Whether this is a genuine rivalry or simply a well-timed publicity stunt remains up for debate. For her part, Peppa seems focused on her own musical ambitions, telling the interviewer, “Pop stars make the best music… One day, I’ll be the biggest pop star ever.”
