Calls to ban GTA 6 in Russia over “destructive and vulgar” content

In our previous meticulous analysis of leaked screenshots, we noted that Grand Theft Auto VI might introduce male exotic dancing. This speculation stems from a promotional poster for bachelorette parties spotted at the entrance of the Delights club in Port Gellhorn. While the inclusion of such activities remains unconfirmed, it would be a logical addition considering the game features a female lead alongside her partner. Nevertheless, even the mere possibility of this content has already sparked demands for a complete ban on the title.

Calls to ban GTA 6 in Russia over “destructive and vulgar” content

Leading the legislative push against the game is Mikhail Ivanov, a deputy of the Bryansk Regional Duma and a high-ranking member of the World Russian People’s Council. He argues that the game’s content is fundamentally at odds with national interests.

“The developers of GTA VI are intentionally incorporating destructive and vulgar elements that are entirely unacceptable for the moral well-being of our society. The planned inclusion of male stripping is a direct and cynical affront to basic ethical norms and traditional spiritual values. Permitting such content is equivalent to the moral corruption of our youth. We must either enforce rigorous legislative restrictions on the distribution of these games or mandate that publishers provide special, ‘sanitized’ versions for our market.”

“Given its immense popularity, Grand Theft Auto is a particularly hazardous tool of influence. We must demonstrate civic consciousness and prevent the sale of this ‘poison’ of permissiveness disguised as entertainment. Financial resources should not be spent on products that undermine our social foundations. It is telling that even foreign developers are being forced to consider age verification systems due to tightening global legislation. Our duty is to remain even more principled on this issue.”

It is curious to see such a deep focus on international regulatory trends while seemingly ignoring a practical reality: Grand Theft Auto VI is unlikely to see an official release in Russia. Since March 2022, both Take-Two and Rockstar Games have suspended all sales and operations in the region, making the debate over local censorship largely symbolic.
