Call of Duty creators acknowledge that annual releases are wearing players out

One of the defining traits of the Call of Duty franchise has long been its yearly release cycle. Multiple major studios work on the series simultaneously, which lets Activision maintain a strict timetable. Still, Treyarch’s developers have acknowledged they recognize players’ fatigue with that cadence.

In 2025 a precedent will be set: for the first time in the Black Ops subseries a new entry will arrive immediately after its predecessor. Previously, there was at least a year between installments in the subseries. Now some fans worry Black Ops 7 might feel too similar to last year’s sixth entry.

Senior producer Yale Miller said in an interview:

“I think the honest answer to that question is ‘Yes.’ I’m concerned.”

He reminded listeners that the original plan was to release two Modern Warfare titles before moving on to BO7.

“We’ll see how we proceed. We’re excited about the possibilities this schedule provides, but to claim I have no doubts would be dishonest.”

At the same time, the studio stresses that Black Ops 7 will have its own identity and atmosphere. The game is set in 2035, and its distinctiveness will be supported by post-launch updates.

“We’re focused on seasonal online content. How do we deliver fresh experiences? More maps, weekly events, new mechanics—like a deeper weapon prestige system.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is scheduled to launch on November 14, 2025, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
