While the ARMY is renowned for their encyclopedic knowledge of BTS, SUGA recently unveiled a piece of personal history so obscure that even his fellow bandmates were left in the dark. During the group’s appearance on Wired’s popular “Autocomplete Interview” series, the global superstars sat down to address the internet’s most burning questions about their careers and personal lives.

When it came time for Min Yoon-gi to address his cue card, he encountered a prompt regarding the origin of his stage name. “I can finally clarify this now,” he remarked, seizing the moment to debunk a long-standing myth about his nomenclature.

SUGA revealed that his pseudonym actually draws inspiration from the world of combat sports—specifically UFC fighter Sean O’Malley and the legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard. In the ring, the “Suga” moniker is traditionally reserved for specialists known for their technical striking and precision. He recalled how Bang Si-Hyuk, the founder of HYBE and a devoted boxing enthusiast, noticed a parallel in the rapper’s style. Years ago, Bang suggested the name, noting that because SUGA was so “technical” with his rap flow, the title was a perfect fit.

The revelation came as a shock to the rest of the septet. For years, SUGA had told the public—and his friends—that his name was simply a condensed version of “shooting guard,” a nod to his position on the basketball court. He admitted that the actual boxing-related explanation had always been “too tedious to explain,” leading him to stick with the simpler basketball narrative. “This is the first time I’m hearing this,” j-hope noted as the other members nodded in collective astonishment.

This candid moment arrives as BTS continues to dominate the global charts following the release of ARIRANG, their first full-length collective project in six years. The album has already secured a second consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, serving as a massive prelude to the group’s upcoming stadium world tour.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Bangtan Boys touched on their emotional reunion following their mandatory military service, shared their favorite fan-made memes, and discussed the deep cultural resonance of their new album’s title. In a lighter moment, RM was asked if he harbored any “regrets” about teaching the other members English.

“No. But they just don’t understand it,” he joked with a sense of playful defeat, much to the amusement of the group. “I showed a lot of willpower… I feel like I just never actually taught them.” Supporting the sentiment with a laugh, Jin added, “The teacher is excellent, but the students aren’t quite up to par.”
