Steering the world’s most prominent boy band is no small feat, yet RM credits the profound “familial” connection he shares with bandmates Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook for his continued resilience.

In a candid sit-down on Apple Music 1’s The Zane Lowe Show—released this past Friday (March 20) in tandem with the debut of BTS’s highly anticipated album ARIRANG—the septet’s designated leader reflected on his evolving responsibilities. Having spent 15 years together, RM noted that the group has transcended professional boundaries to become a genuine family.

He described an unspoken understanding within the group, where members instinctively step up to support one another during lean times. “We get it. ‘You’ve been through your hard times, bro. Then I’ll do some more. I’ll take care of you,’” RM explained. While he cherishes the safety net his bandmates provide, he admitted to occasionally grappling with the heavy mantle of leadership.

Despite his central role, he emphasized that he remains just one-seventh of the collective. RM noted that effective leadership often involves knowing when to relinquish control and simply “go with the flow” as a member of the team, adding that he is “still figuring out” what defines a truly great leader.

The stakes for BTS have never been higher. ARIRANG marks their first full-length project in six years and serves as their grand reunion following mandatory military service and various successful solo ventures. The album follows the success of 2020’s Be, which previously dominated the Billboard 200.

This new chapter has already presented physical hurdles. BigHit Music recently disclosed that RM sustained an ankle injury shortly before their comeback performance in Seoul. While the leader was determined to perform at full capacity, the agency prioritized his long-term health by limiting his choreography for the global livestream event.

Discussing their unprecedented reach and enduring legacy, the group also touched upon their future. Jin remarked that while nothing is permanent, the group is committed to preserving their success through constant collective effort. Suga took a more optimistic view, suggesting the group could remain active well into their 80s or 90s if they so choose.
