Art of Play in Brooklyn, New York, released another statement on Monday, Oct. 12, after Kelly Clarkson criticized the art store for giving her the Pretty Woman treatment.
In an Instagram post, the store wrote that it wanted to clarify additional details about Clarkson’s visit to the Curiosity Shop on Saturday.
During the five minutes she spent in the store, she inquired about a mechanical bird puppet named Molly, according to the post. The store explained that while Molly is permanently attached to the wall and serves as a de facto mascot, a nearly identical automaton is owned by its creator, artist Bliss Kolb in Seattle. Kolb told the store he would be willing to part with Molly’s twin for $15,000, and staff explained this to Clarkson.
The store also claimed it offered to show her a different singing bird automaton made by a traditional clockmaking shop in Germany that cost $2,000 and that she could have taken home that day, but Clarkson allegedly did not stick around long enough to see it.
The store added that it reached out to Clarkson directly to clear the air, stating it wished her the best and hoped everyone could eventually laugh about the misunderstanding.
The Grammy winner’s online disagreement with the shop gained widespread attention after Clarkson posted on X on Oct. 10 that an employee looked at her as if she could not afford an item and told her he could find something comparable.
Clarkson wrote that the employee lost a huge sale and recommended that people visit Art of Play in Brooklyn if they enjoyed being treated like the Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman.
The shop replied that Molly was permanently attached to the wall and not for sale. Clarkson responded by sharing a photo showing a $15,000 price tag next to the display, writing that the store was rude and a liar.
