Brandon Sanderson Hints at Faster Release Schedule for Remaining Stormlight Archive Books
Brandon Sanderson is already thinking about the second half of The Stormlight Archive, two years after Wind and Truth concluded the series’ first five-book arc. During a Halloween stream, where he appeared in a Shrek costume, the author shared a loose schedule for the remaining five books.
Asked whether the final five entries could arrive every three years starting in 2031, Sanderson called that timeline “pretty realistic.” He then suggested a faster possibility: two or three books released in succession, two years apart, followed by the final two “a little after.”
Sanderson said he feels the urge to return to the series soon. Once he starts, he thinks he’ll “rip through the first few of them pretty quickly.” He is also writing and releasing novels in other series set in his wider Cosmere universe.
The Stormlight Archive began with The Way of Kings in 2010 and is planned as a 10-book series. The first five books form one arc, while the remaining five will serve as a sequel. A significant time skip is planned between books five and six.
What else is Brandon Sanderson working on?
On Dec. 8, Sanderson will release the print edition of The Fires of December, a standalone Cosmere story published under the Hoid’s Travails banner.

He is also set to begin the third era of Mistborn with Ghostbloods, currently scheduled for December 2028. Under his tentative plan, the next two books would follow in 2029 and 2030.
Sanderson is working on adaptations of his books at Apple TV Plus. His deal with Apple, announced earlier this year, gives him creative control over the projects, including final approval.
The first project under the deal will be a film adaptation of the first Mistborn trilogy, with Sanderson writing the scripts. A television adaptation of The Stormlight Archive is also in the works.
