Baldur’s Gate 3 creator Sven Vincke responded to industry giants’ antics: “Ideas like that have never worked”
Swen Vincke, head of Larian Studios, weighed in on recent developments in the games industry, reminding readers that faster, cheaper production rarely translates to better quality.
In a recent post on X he wrote:
“Perhaps now is an appropriate moment to remind people that making games faster and cheaper while charging more for them has never worked.”
Vincke did not name a specific incident, but two recent developments could explain his remark: the $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts by private investors, and Microsoft’s sharp price increase for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The edit history of his post suggests he was likely referring to the former. In his original wording he was more direct—mentioning “people from the games industry” and adding, “I don’t understand why they think [this strategy] will work now”—but that line was later removed.
Although his comment was vague, users quickly connected the dots and debated the EA deal.
“You can assume that the large investment firms snapping up game studios don’t care about game quality. Profit is what matters. If they can save money by laying off staff and rushing development at the expense of quality, they’ll do it in an instant,” wrote MarkOfTheDragon.
