Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” Ascends to Elite 3 Billion Stream Milestone on Spotify

The legendary anthem “Wake Me Up” by Avicii has officially surpassed the 3-billion-stream threshold on Spotify, according to data shared by the streaming giant on Monday, February 9. This monumental accomplishment places the 2013 folk-EDM hybrid in an exclusive pantheon, as it becomes one of only 51 tracks in music history to reach this staggering level of global consumption.

This achievement is the latest in a series of record-breaking moments for the song. In early 2014, “Wake Me Up” distinguished itself as the first track in Spotify’s history to ever hit 200 million streams. When it later crossed the 2-billion mark in 2023, it secured Avicii’s legacy as the first Swedish artist to reach that specific milestone on the platform.

As a definitive pillar of the EDM movement, “Wake Me Up” reshaped the landscape of dance-pop crossovers. The track climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2013 and enjoyed an impressive 54-week run on the charts. Bolstered by the soulful vocal performance of Aloe Blacc, the song also dominated the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, reigning at No. 1 for 26 weeks during its 55-week residency.

While the song is now a global classic, its debut was famously polarizing. The late producer was initially met with a chorus of boos when he premiered the experimental track at the 2013 Ultra Music Festival. That performance, featuring live appearances by Blacc and country vocalist Audra Mae, served as the introduction to Avicii’s groundbreaking album True. The project further explored the intersection of electronic production and traditional genres, notably featuring bluegrass artist Dan Tyminski on the hit “Hey Brother.”

By joining the 3-billion-stream club, “Wake Me Up” aligns with a prestigious group of hits that includes The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” Ed Sheeran’s “The Shape of You,” The Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather,” and Harry Styles’ “As It Was.”
