Ariana Grande is laying the groundwork for her upcoming Petal era. The global pop icon announced on Friday (May 8) that “Hate That I Made You Love Me” will serve as the lead single from her highly anticipated eighth studio album, with a release scheduled for later this month.
Taking to Instagram, the singer unveiled the single’s stark, black-and-white cover art—a close-up portrait featuring hair draped over her eyes, mirroring the aesthetic of her Petal project. “Hate that i made you love me … my first single off of petal,” she captioned the post.
Expressing her deep connection to the track, Grande described it as “one of my favorite songs i’ll ever write.” She also highlighted her collaboration with industry heavyweights Max Martin and ILYA, referring to the duo as her “favorite collaborators and dearest human beings in the world.”
“I simply cannot wait for it to be yours,” she shared with fans.
The new single is slated for a May 29 release, building momentum for the album Petal, which arrives in late July. This new chapter follows her acclaimed 2024 record, Eternal Sunshine, which topped the Billboard 200 and produced two chart-topping hits on the Billboard Hot 100: “Yes, And?” and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love).”
Just one day before the official announcement, Grande offered a glimpse into the album’s creative direction, sharing a candid video of herself discussing the project with her team. “It’s a little feral,” she noted. “It’s definitely from a place I’ve been maybe too shy or polite to tap into before. This kind of just feels like, ‘F–k it.’”
